Kenya Power is excited to announce its participation in the Road to Addis, an epic 1,600 km road trip from Nairobi to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, using electric vehicles. We will join a host of other e-mobility stakeholders in this monumental safari organised by Intro Africa. The launch was announced today at a press briefing in Tigoni.
This landmark electric journey will showcase East Africa’s readiness for the adoption of e-mobility by demonstrating the practicality of long-distance travel, tackling range anxiety, and highlighting the potential for regional EV corridors. With over 90% of Kenya’s electricity generated from renewable sources, integrating EVs into this green energy mix provides a dual gain: cutting transport emissions while stimulating off-peak demand.
Speaking during the launch, Kenya Power's Director of the Institute of Energy Studies and Research (IESR), Dr Jeremiah Kiplagat, said that the road trip will also serve as a live test for EV performance, charging infrastructure, and cross-border travel needs. These insights, he added, will shape the rollout of our charging stations and strengthen our regional e-mobility partnerships.
The Road to Addis precedes the Africa E-Mobility Week 2025 (AEW2025) conference in Addis Ababa from 14th to 16th October 2025, a transformative moment for sustainable mobility on the continent. AEW2025 will bring together high-profile leaders, industry pioneers, investors, and policymakers to accelerate Africa’s transition to electric mobility.
Kenya Power’s participation in both the Road to Addis and AEW2025 builds on the momentum of the annual Kenya Power E-Mobility Stakeholders Conference and Expo, where we bring together policymakers, innovators, and industry leaders to foster collaboration and accelerate the adoption of EVs in Kenya.
Through this initiative, we reaffirm our commitment to innovation, climate action, and collaboration to advance electric mobility in Kenya and across East Africa.
